Transpacific formed as a trio in 2000 by Rob Henson, Stuart McLeod, and Kevin Goldsmith, all of whom were active in the experimental music scene of Seattle. After recording a 4 song demo by Randall Dunn at Aleph Studios that same year, Transpacific went on to record an additional suite of songs at Jackpot! Recording Studio by Larry Crane in 2001. The band then added local noise artist and musician Carl Farrow to supplement guitar and processing textures, and in 2003 an additional suite of songs were recorded by Mell Dettmer at Avast! Recording Company in Seattle. The band performed a number of shows from 2001-2007 in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California.

The members of Transpacific were interested in exploring the range of textures and devices in minimalism, noise, and primitivism. The music might draw comparisons with other instrumental bands of the early 2000s, like Mono, Explosions in the Sky, or Godspeed You Black Emperor!, however members’ influences were far more diverse than just the instrumental rock of its time: Late 19th century orchestral music, Ligeti, Minimalism, Glenn Branca, Krautrock, and a slew of heavier bands factored into the overall perspective.
